Industrial Air Compressors

Have you ever heard someone say that “compressed air is the fourth utility”? Compressed air is a vital part of any industrial processing and manufacturing. Facilities use air compressors to power power tools, protect expensive equipment from dust and other contaminants, improve safety in harsh conditions, and for many other purposes. Northwest Pump offers air compressors to keep your facility running smoothly. Our recent acquisition of Air Compressor Service company in Everett, WA, has enriched our air compressor knowledge even further. Learn more about the four main kinds of air compressors below.

Rotary Screw Compressors

Rotary screw air compressors use a pair of rotating screws to compress air to a desired pressure. This type of compressor can be oil-flooded or oil-free, with oil free rotary screws using an additional coating on the screws to dissipate heat.

Our Brands with Rotary Screw Compressor Products

Sullair has been offering energy-efficient, single and two-stage rotary screw air compressors ranging from 5HP-600HP since 1965. The company offers complete compressed air systems to help compressed air users reduce energy costs and improve productivity by analyzing, managing, and controlling their compressed air systems. These air systems include plant air audits, energy-efficient products, system controls such as equipment to monitor and manage these systems, air distribution products, and after-purchase support. Each component of the compressed air packages carefully matches capacity and pressure to provide maximum performance and energy efficiency.

Our Sullair products are available in our Oregon, Washington, Idaho, & Montana territories.

Centrifugal Compressors

Centrifugal air compressors work similarly to centrifugal pumps, with air being drawing into a rotating impeller to the center by centrifugal force.

Oil-less Scroll Compressors

Scroll air compressors compress air by using a pair of ‘scrolls’ or ‘spirals’. Unlike rotary screw compressors, only one scroll moves. This forces the air into gas pockets at various points until it reaches the desired pressure and is forced out to the desired location. These scroll compressors do not require lubrication, unlike other air compressors.

Our Brands with Oil-less Scroll Compressor Products

Sullair’s SRL air compressor series utilizes scroll technology to provide 100% oil-free air. 60Hz capacities from 12 to 118 ACFM; pressures from 94 to 145 PSIG, 5-40 HP,(3.75-30 KW) oil-less design ensures zero risks of oil entering the compression chamber.

These air compressors reach noise levels as low as 56 dBA, which means a separate room for noise reduction is not necessary. With simple start-stop controls, the SRL compressors use the least amount of energy possible for the demand of air needed. Sullair also designs these compressors with minimizing maintenance in mind up to 10,000 hours of operation. On top of this, an oil-free compressor means no oil changes or top-offs are required!

Broad product offering includes many configurations to suit your application needs. Available in tank-mounted (60, 80 & 120 gals) and enclosed multi-module models available.

  • High-efficiency asymmetrical profile rotors are coated with FDA-approved food-grade PTFE to resist corrosion and extend the compressor’s life.
  • Rotor housings are cast and jacketed to assure thermal stability
  • Air passages are coated with food-grade PTFE to resist corrosion
  • Sullair SRL Series compressors are independently certified for Class 0 Oil-Free performance under ISO 8573-1.

Oil Usage in Compressors

In recent years, new technology has allowed air compressors to work with reduced or even no lubrication requirements. Learn more about the difference between oil-flooded, oil-free, and oil-less below.

Oil Flooded

Oil-Flooded is the standard for most air compressors. What this means is that oil is present and mixed in with the air that is being compressed. The oil is then separated from the compressed air. When working with oil-flooded compressors, it is important to keep them well maintained. Eventually, concentrated water has a possibility of mixing with the oil, which can create harmful fumes that can harm a facility’s equipment as well as its employees.

Oil-Free

Oil Free, often confused with oil-less, compressors are becoming a more popular option within the market of air compression systems. This is because oil-free compressors do not have the air come in direct contact with the lubricating oil, meaning that the air quality will be far better than that of an oil-flooded compressor. When air purity is critical – oil-free air is essential. Oil particles in compressed air can contaminate the processes and production.  Reduced risk of contamination helps improve your business operations and profitability. Sullair’s ISO 8573-1 Class Zero compliant oil-free compressors are perfect for the electronics & high tech manufacturing industries, as well as textile manufacturing, and food & beverage industries- to name a few.

Oil-Less

Champion Oil Free

Oil-less means that an air compressor has no oil within the machine all. This makes it a step beyond oil-free compressors— despite the two terms being very similar. These specific compressors utilize different lubricant materials such as Teflon to replace oil entirely. These compressors require less maintenance than either of their counterparts and can potentially be quieter than the other options as well. They also have less impact on the environment and are the safest option for industries like Food & Beverage and Pharmaceutical production.
